Oh Canada Day yawn does anyone care?

It's Canada Day July 1st.
Events, Photos, "Are you Proud to be Canadian?" Reader Feedback.
By Duane Burnett.
01july2008duaneburnett (372)

During the 2010 Winter Olympics, Vancouver, BC was a sea to sea of red maple leafs.

I thought I would see where all that Canadian Pride is now, so asked readers to tell me how they celebrate Canada Day on July 1st, and what they were proud or not proud about Canada.

1july2008duaneburnett (266)

The response was like getting maple sap from a maple tree. Slow drip coming, and just a smattering of comments in the bucket. Kind of what I expected though.

Perhaps Canada's national day is just an annoying bother to a long weekend holiday from work and for most of us its the same old as any other day. No big deal!

I think Canadians have gone back to their quiet conservative nationalism with a bit more confidence and are happy to leave the enthusiastic patriotism to their American cousins or other countries that go insane on their big days.

I am a very proud Canadian, but remind myself regularly that their are no borders here. They exist in our minds. This is particularly true when it comes to the economy, pollution, poverty, disease and environmental destruction. We are one big family in a vast universe.

Gibsons 1 July 2007 Duane Burnett (15)

Here's are the few thoughts I received about Canada Day from the Sunshine Coast:

Hey Sunshine Coast, what do you do special for Canada Day July 1st? What makes you PROUD of being Canadian? Or are you ashamed of Canada? I am going to write an article about how you celebrate and what you think of Canada in the world and want to hear from you! Thanks Duane

Yvette Fleming
Sunshine Coasters care about the people in their Community. They are proud to be Canadians and they love their country. There are many volunteer hours spent towards making it a better place. They promote themselves as being welcoming and inclusive and they certainly are. Sechelt just celebrated a multi-culturalism day. What more can I say! It's truly heart-warming to live here.

Manuen Edwards
I am at the parade every year also love it !

Joey Gray
My Canadian grandmother gave birth in the States on July 1st in the 1920's to a boy who still can't claim Canadian citizenship because... she was female.

See what I mean? Not exactly an overwhelming response to Canada Day. I must admit, even the Canada Day photos galleries in my massive flickr archives are only looked at by a few hundred people over the years.

Many Canada Day events I have attended on the Sunshine Coast are dead. Barely anyone shows up. Luckily everyone loves a parade, so sunny weather and the parade in Sechelt on a long weekend attracts a good crowd.

I don't think this means anyone is not absolutely thrilled and honoured to be in this great northern country. I think perhaps it is that people are too busy with their lives and more involved in technology like facebook and video games, then community life.

I hear over and over again from the community itself that volunteers are burnt out and exhausted, that people are not attending events, and some events are close to folding completely.

Several years ago I approached my former newspaper publisher and said that our editorial had to change to reflect that the majority of people are staying home, or we would loose our audience and business as most of the community does not attend community events.

So where are they? At home! What are you doing there? You tell me!

I probably won't be attending Canada Day Celebrations on the Sunshine Coast, BC myself this year either. I had hoped to have a parade float together as I adore parades, but just couldn't seem to get any help behind me even though I put it out there and on top of it I struggling with my health a lot more.

I have imagination and vision but lack the carpentry skills to nail a piece of wood together. LOL I am an award winning float builder from the age of 12 though.

first parade float My first float ever for the Ladner Pioneer May Day Parade.

This year I had hoped to have something together for several community and theatre groups, especially something in honour of my late dog Tundra, who passed away January 27thm 2010. Tundra was over 15 years old and attended hundreds of events with me as I did my best to support the Sunshine Coast community in everything they do.

Tundra was like my child, so I took a leap of faith and started a public memorial fund to raise money for dog and wheelchair accessible people friendly drinking water fountains in parks up and down the Sunshine Coast. Set up an account at the Sunshine Coast Credit Union for donations, but to this day I am terrified to even go get an account balance.

This video and his fan page will have to be the extent of my efforts for now, sorry Tundra, you are loved and missed greatly. Probably why I am taking a raincheck on Canada Day this year.

There are several circumstances that will be too much emotional for me. I was thinking I would just walk the route and take photos of all you fantabulous Sunshine Coaster's lined up along the parade route to shake it up from previous years where the parade passes by me. Thousands of photos later! Enjoy the links below.

And I my as well admit my guilty secret while I am at it.

I love July 4th, Independence Day celebrations in the United States. I think I love the amazing pomp and pageantry and good tunes! Love to watch them on TV like I do New Years Celebrations from New York and around the world.

Maybe a nice walk in nature for Canada Day will be my treat to our great country this year in honour of bringing healing to our dying planet.

EVENTS
I would like to thank Bonar for putting together his weekly "B" List email with Canada Day event information on it. I haven't seen any event pages on facebook created, so without Bonar I would have no clue what was going on! Thanks Bonar!

See tons of Canada Day photos from the archives. Sorry about the watermarks, its been a learning process for me.

Hands Across The Sand - Roberts Creek, Sunshine Coast, BC Canada

The image is powerful, the message is simple. NO to Offshore Oil Drilling, YES to Clean Energy.

SEE ALL 100 PHOTOS

Thousands around the world came together to hold hands at noon on the beach to stand up for the Earth's Oceans.

In Roberts Creek, British Columbia, Canada on the Sunshine Coast, over 50 people came together in celebration and to send a message that they do not want oil drilling or oil tankers on the west coast of North America, in British Columbia, Canada nor Alaska or Washington in the United States.

26june2010duaneburnett (103)

Hands Across The Sand is an organization committed to protecting our coastlines and waterways from near and off shore oil drilling. They organized a unique world protest and celebration calling on people to join hands on June 26, 2010!

Hands Across the Sand website
http://www.handsacrossthesand.com

Hands Across the Sand is a movement made of people of all walks of life and crosses political affiliations. This movement is not about politics; it is about protection of our coastal economies, oceans, marine wildlife, fishing industry and coastal military missions. Let us share our knowledge, energies and passion for protecting all of the above from the devastating effects of oil drilling.
Mission:

To organize a national movement to oppose offshore oil drilling and champion clean energy and renewables. These gatherings will bring thousands of American citizens to our beaches and cities and will draw metaphorical and actual lines in the sand; human lines in the sand against the threat oil drilling poses to coastal economies and marine environment.

To convince our politicians to stop the expansion of offshore oil drilling and to adopt policies encouraging clean and renewable energy sources. America needs legislation that creates tax incentives and subsidies to encourage the growth of clean energy and renewable industries for the future.

Staycation: Sunshine Coast BC Picks Their Favourite Local Vacation Spots

STAYCATION ALL I EVER WANTED!
June 25, 2010. Duane Burnett.

The Sunshine Coast B.C.'s top picks & favourite places to vacation and visit in their own back yards. Vacations that don't require a ferry. Unless of course you don't live here.

05july2009duaneburnett (113)

With the economy in a slump, and everyone needing a bit of time away, what better way to get a bit of rest and relaxation then enjoying some time exploring your own hometown. So I thought I would ask my friends online what they would recommend to their fellow locals?

The Sunshine Coast is a 40 min ferry ride or cruise as I like to call it with BC Ferries from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver to Langdale, near Gibsons, BC

For Vancouverites wanting to escape to a "Clean Get Away" (the tourism slogan I created to describe the Sunshine Coast area) I want to give you a heads up that in the Summer the area is absolutely packed and often over booked.

However, the fall, winter, and spring months are off-season and offer great storm watching, winter sports like snowshoeing, skiing, and snowboarding, adventures sports like kayking, mountain biking, long boarding, PLUS amazing body, mind & spirit services, and more too!

So without further blogging by myself, I am going to let the wonderful Sunshine Coast people speak for our area themselves!

Favourite Spots on the Sunshine Coast, BC
Gord Bell
cant miss" big firs" park in Halfmoon Bay ...badass big trees~

Manuen Edwards
I love a good hike through Cliff Gilker Park and swims at Davis Bay Beach ... the Bella Beach Inn in Davis bay is a nice place to stay especially with a ocean view room. Catherine lake is awesome too, nice campground and beautiful small sandy beach good for kids and swimming! pack a lunch-your gear- hit the beach - camp and stay for the weekend ... at least!

Rose Spinne
When I get back to the coast one of the first places I want to hit is Secret Beach in Gibsons. You can't beat walking on tiny, polished, black pebbles! And Yes, my son and I always took a picnic lunch. And something to collect shells, pebbles, beach glass, driftwood, dried sea weed... you get the idea! :) I suppose I've just ruined the secret though... *sigh*
Wish I was there now!!!

Tracy Lynn Watts
Well if cost is an issue Kline lake (Egmont) is likely the most affordable camping spot. Been there many times. It used to be free. I Dont know anymore?

Rhys Edwards
Thormanby Island long weekends.. Soooo good despite the lack of plumbing or hydro. Sand cliffs are awesome to climb. Just don"t forget the tide goes way out in the morning.. and then yer boat is stuck on the beach when you wake. and waiting till the tide comes back in around is a long time if yer outta beer and smokes :-) There were hundreds, if not a few thousand peeps last year for 3 days... from all over the west coast.

Can't comment on your other page so I'll leave one here for Powell River. Recently we kayaked from Nanton Lake into Horseshoe Lake and camped overnight. It's part of the Powell River Forest Canoe Route, but this section can be done without a portage. Nanton has a nice forest campground that makes a good home base for remote camping if you don't have a canoe or kayak to visit the other lakes. More info here http://powellriverbooks.blogspot.com/2008/11/nanton-lake-forest-campground.html and here http://powellriverbooks.blogspot.com/2010/05/horseshoe-lake-kayak-adventure.html

Penny Berdahl
Shhhhhhh don't tell everyone lol Its OUR special secret that we live in paridise . We are all truly blessed to live in all this natural beauty :)

Phill Murray
There is no place in the world I would rather be than Roberts Creek in the summertime.

Wendy Weir
Love to take Keats ferry from gibsons to Keats island with Toni -grt hiking and camping

Linda Shearsmith
On Sunday hike up Mt. Daniel in Garden Bay, go for a dip in the lake after that and then head off to the pub for some live entertainment!!

Penny Berdahl
My Fav is...packing a lunch or dinner & going & sitting at BonnieBrook.....The swimming access is perfect 2 ...Its peaceful & beautiful...we are truly blessed to live here! :)

Teresa Eckford
Hiking up Soames Hill with a picnic and enjoying the latter while gazing out at Howe Sound :)

Tracy Lynn Watts
They are all great suggestions. Wondering what Tetraheadran is like ? Anyone been up there? been here all my life and still havent done the Tetraheadron. Or Brooks falls. Only twice done the Skookumchuch once on bike. And seen the limestone caves they are kinda neat too.

David Lesko
Tetrahedron is incredible, my summer home pretty much. Definitely can not be done in one day, or one week for that matter. And just on the other side, before you reach the tet, is Mt. Richardson, beautiful views from the view point that span from Sechelt to the Skookumchuck and over parts of the Caren Range. Ah yes, the Caren Range... Not room enough for me to describe everything.

Trish Thompson
ok everyone is sharing....favorite Saturday nite out is an evening of music and mayhem at the Roberts Creek Legion followed by a late nite sit at the beach right down from the legion.

Margy Lutz
Between Powell River and Lund just off Highway 101 is the Dinner Rock Forestry Campground. The entrance is steep for big RVs but its remote location make it excellent for tents and smaller campers. Hiking, mountain biking, scuba diving, car-top boat launch and great Strait of Georgia views. Pit toilets, bring your own water. Close to Lund for supplies and restaurants.

Susan Davidson
camping beside the beach at Hotel Lake with grand kids....thumbs up !! perfect beach and amenities for all ages.

Culinary Graduation Never Tasted So Great

June 23, 2010. Duane Burnett
23june2010duaneburnett (19)

I had the honour of being a guest at the final exam dinner by the Sunshine Coast Alternative School Culinary 2010 program.

Did someone tell them the way to a journalist heart is by feeding them?

Judging criteria was tough! We had three rules to follow:

1) Don't eat the dessert first!
2) Talk with the chefs about what they were serving
3) Buss your own dishes. LOL

The graduating students cooked a delicious buffet for many distinguished guests, friends and very proud family at the Horizons building in Sechelt, BC.

Dinner included lemon chicken, twice baked potatoes, asparagus-broccoli pesto salad, an aboriginal yam feta salad, plus an assortment of delicious desserts, which included a chocolate fountain with fresh strawberries to dip into it.

The students received thunderous applause in approval plus a standing ovation for their terrific accomplishments when all the awards were handed out at the ceremony.

SEE ALL 60 PHOTOS ON FLICKR

The students passion is in the study of the Culinary Arts. Some are in their first, second or graduating years from the program made possible by the Sunshine Coast School District #46.

23june2010duaneburnett (7)

One of the special guests was School District #46 Superintendent Deborah Palmer who told me that the culinary graduation dinner was the "best way" to spend her time, as it was all about the kids, what they are good at, and allows them to be successful at what they love to do.

Class time in the program includes exploring job and people skills with Rick Gibb the Career & Tech teacher.

In the afternoons they explore and create in the kitchen with Instructor and Red Seal Chef, Tammy Saigeon.

This year they are also featuring a greater first nation theme to their culinary program thanks to the Shishalh Nation.

It was Tammy's first year with the program that has been going on for about 8 years now.

Rick Gibb had especially high praise for Tammy.

He said she not only refurbished the kitchen in the older building but had terrific teaching skills that helped foster the students into a career in the culinary arts. He was very "appreciative" of everything she has done.

As a special surprise, the students presented Tammy with a stunning first nations scarf.

Many of these students go on with their studies with the local ACE IT program and receive their first level red seal.

SEE PHOTOS ON FACEBOOK. TAG YOU"RE IT!

They also have the opportunity to learn from experts in our Communities and take part in community events.

Many field trips within our community and the lower mainland are planned so that students can see for themselves the diverse career path that the Culinary Arts can offer.

Student also work towards obtaining certification in Foodsafe, First Aid, Serving It Right and WHMIS.

23june2010duaneburnett (48)

Tammy Saigeon tells me the most important thing is the opportunity for youth that may have struggled with life circumstances and choices to be able to find their inner power and passion. To feel good about who they are and what they have to offer others is truly empowering the youth of our community.

The Alternate School provides learner-centred programs that assist children and youth in developing the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to build a healthy community. They welcome individual differences within an atmosphere of mutual respect and co-operation.

The Sunshine Coast Alternative School consists of 10 self-contained programs located at different sites. These are district programs that take both school, and self or family referrals.

I had a wonderful evening and thank the students, staff, volunteers for a lovely dinner and my distinguished table guests for their terrific company.

To the students I am proud of each and everyone of you. Well done!

Please join me in wishing the Sunshine Coast Culinary students and all the Class of 2010 Grads in our terrific community the very best!

It's Always A Good Day on the Sunshine Coast!

Anniversary of Michael Jackson's Death June 25

1 Year Anniversary of Micheal Jackson's Death.

Its hard to believe that a year has gone by since Michael Jackson was apparently killed by a drug overdose by his own doctor.

The fateful day June 25, 20009 turned heads around the world and caused millions to openly grieve in the streets.

A billion or 2 tuned in to watch his stunning memorial tribute in Los Angeles, California broadcast live around the planet.

Michael Jackson has seen no shortage of controversy around his life from child star to superstar.

Between you and me, I never really caught the Michael Jackson or Madonna "fever" in the 1980's and 90's.

I rejected both entertainers in favour of my fabulous Canadian bands which I thought wrote more intelligent lyrics with great political insight and meaning, rather then that trashy American Pop written to appeal on a commercial level to appeal to the most common denominator.

Well, a decade or so later now, I have slowly come around and can really love and appreciate both Micheal and Madonna as well as some other US bands from that era for what they are: Great!

Wikipedia says "Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) was an American recording artist, entertainer, and philanthropist. Referred to as the King of Pop, Jackson is recognized as the most successful entertainer of all time by the 'Guinness World Records'."

What made me notice there was more about MJ then Pop and killer dance moves was his Earth Song. This was the genre of music I was supporting coming from Canadian artists at the time.

Earth Song VIDEO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAi3VTSdTxU

When researching some links for you to compile about Michael, on the anniversary of the singers death, I was surprised at how many awards he was nominated for but didn't win. But win he did....

According to the Internet Movie Data Base some of his awards included:

1985 Won Grammy Best Video Album
for: Thriller (1983) (TV)

1994 Won MTV Movie Award Best Movie Song
for: Free Willy (1993) For the song: "Will You Be There".

1984 Won People's Choice Award Favorite All-Around Male Entertainer

Thriller VIDEO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOnqjkJTMaA

A re-release of the the Thriller video has received over 76 million views in less then a year.

Micheal Jackson's Bio on his "Official" Website states:
http://www.michaeljackson.com/ca/bio

Michael Jackson, one of the most widely beloved entertainers and profoundly influential artists of all-time, leaves an indelible imprint on popular music and culture.

Five of Jackson's solo albums - "Off the Wall," "Thriller," "Bad," "Dangerous" and "HIStory," all with Epic Records - are among the top-sellers of all time and “Thriller” holds the distinction as the largest selling album worldwide in the history of the recording industry with more than 70 million units sold. Additionally, singles released from the Thriller album sold more than 100 million copies worldwide, another all time record.

Bad VIDEO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsUXAEzaC3Q

During his extraordinary career, he sold an estimated 750 million records worldwide, released 13 No.1 singles and became one of a handful of artists to be inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Guinness Book of World Records recognized Jackson as the Most Successful Entertainer of All Time and "Thriller" as the Biggest Selling Album of All Time. Jackson won 13 Grammy Awards and received the American Music Award's Artist of the Century Award.

Michael Jackson started in the music business at the age of 11 with his brothers as a member of the Jackson 5. In the early 1980s, he defined the art form of music video with such ground-breaking videos as "Billie Jean," "Beat It" and the epic "Thriller." Jackson's sound, style and dance moves inspired subsequent generations of pop, soul, R&B and hip-hop artists.

FLASH MOB

And then there is this thing about the Michael Jackson Flashmob. People around the world rehearse and rehearse for a spontaneous dance in a public place to a MJ song.

According to the Thrill the World website where you can learn the official dance moves, their 2009 event broke a World Record!

22,923 people danced in 32 countries and broke the Record Holders Republic! Volunteers in 278 events around the world Thrilled The World in 2009 raising over $85,000 USD for 80 charities!

Thrill The World encourages you to Start planning for 2010.
Our plan this year, is to have two (2) Thrill Times with a 12 hour difference in between.

The first Thrill Time will be at 11:00 AM GMT Saturday, October 23, 2010.

The second Thrill Time will be at 23:00 PM GMT Saturday, October 23, 2010.
(not Oct. 30th)

Can someone help me with the math on that for Pacific Standard Time (PST)? I think there is also a daylight saving change in their somewhere too.

I know for the 2009 event the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) organized a dance rehearsal class to learn the steps and then they joined thousands of people at the Vancouver event. The people who participated said they had a blast.

I haven't heard about any plans for this year, but if I do, I will be sure to let you know.

Amsterdam, Flash mob VIDEO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=je1KOcBYGjM

Here is a Thriller flash mob on a subway train! There are endless examples of this kind of tribute to Michael all over the internet and youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6EDAZ3crdY

Love him or hate him, I think he was one of the most influential musical superstars of the century.

Thanks so much for reading my blog and all your feedback, comments, likes and looks!

It's Always A Good Day on the Sunshine Coast!

Best Wishes, Duane

Will Twilight Eclipse New Moon?

Links, Show Times, Videos!

Twihard or Not Twihard?

Are you looking forward to Twilight Eclipse as much as New Moon last year?

The Los Angeles times reported on Tuesday, June 22nd that fans of 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse' were already lining up and camping out side the Nokia Plaza at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles days ahead of the movie's red carpet premiere on Thursday June 24th, 2010.

Twilight Eclipse will be in Movie Theatres Wednesday, June 30th. Lots of fan links below...

Someone asked me to describe what the appeal of this movie was so I explained it was a teen vampire soap opera drama. And I mean that in a good way. Am I far off the mark?

Why do you think it is so popular?

And is Team Vampire and Team Wearwolf all the buzz this year, or is everyone pretty much done with the Team Jacob, Edward, Bella thing?

According to the official Twilight Eclipse movie premiere site they will be screening the movie at 7:30pm, Thursday. Of course not before the Press check-in from 3-4pm, the Red Carpet Opens at 5pm, and the Will-Call also at 5pm.

I had to look that up, thanks wikipedia. A Will-Call is when you can pick up pre-purchased tickets to an event.

I attended the Twilight New Moon premiere at the Raven's Cry Theatre in Sechelt, BC last year, on November 27th, 2009, just to see what was up?

There was a massive line-up and many people had staked a spot for best seats starting around 3pm in the afternoon, even though the movie had already been released a week or two before hand in Vancouver movie theatres.

I was curious about all the buzz and hype as I had a hugely successful 6 ticket give away to see the movie at the Raven's Cry Theatre on my facebook and twitter social network. I think there were around 500 entries and the movie was all the buzz.

In THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger as Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between Edward and Jacob — knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella is confronted with the most important decision of her life.

I checked around the Gibsons Cinema and Raven's Cry Theatre websites and both show the movie as coming soon and confirmed to run June 30 to July 8th with a special midnight show on Tuesday night, June 29th.

What I do think is very kewl, is that two Hollywood North Summer blockbuster's were filmed in Vancouver, Canada and are in theatres this year! That is extremely good for the television and movie industry here.

Besides Taylor Lautner and the Twilight gang filming in B.C. there was also another production crew filming Charlie St Cloud with Zac Efron, Ray Liota, Kim Basinger, Augustus Prew, Amanda Crew and Charlie Tahan.

Charlie St Cloud is schedule for release on July 30th.

When the Charlie St Cloud production chose Gibsons, BC and the beautiful landing harbour for a location, I was thrilled to get a part as an extra with many of my actor friends. It was also a great opportunity for me to get lots of behind the scenes magic photos and some candid shots of some of the stars to attract future movies productions to the Sunshine Coast.

I noticed that so many Zac Efron fans were using my photos from the filming on their websites and fan pages, that I created a blogspot compiling as many of them as I can and included links to all their links and all the photo galleries for Charlie St Cloud including the 700+ I took, which you can see at the links below.

And of course Twilight links too!

From what I understand, maybe you can help me out here, there were plans for three movies in the Twilight Series, but this third installment was split into two, possible three new episodes, which means there will be a Twilight Four and possibly Five!

Do we here Twilight 13 ???

Sechelt Children's Playground Wheelchair Accessible

Psssssst pass it along......
Playground wheelchair accessible!

21june2010duaneburnett
Summer Solstice, Monday, June 21, 2010 Evergreen Landscaping crew from Gibsons, BC put the finishing touches to wheelchair friendly accessible decking around the Rotary children's playground park on Wharf street next to the new volleyball courts & Trail Bay wharf in Sechelt, BC. The area also now includes public washrooms and a spectacular beach front view!

Truly a Sunshine Coast effort by numerous businesses.

I was there when the playground was officially opened back in September 2007.

The Sunshine Coast Rotary Clubs from Gibsons, Sechelt and Pender Harbour do tonnes of good in the community.

So much so I volunteered to host the 2009 Rotary TV Auction on COAST TV and had an absolute blast with the volunteers and television crew.

***

The Rotary Club auction managed to raise $39,000 in these tough economic times - way to go Coastal folks. Down only 4%

Rotary would like to thank all of the companies who support the Sunshine Coast Communities though your generous donations to the Rotary Coast TV Auction. There would be no auction without your generous support.

We would also like to thank all of those who facilitate and promote the Auction...Coast TV, School District 46, The Local, The Coast Reporter, CKAY, Suncoast Central and Duane Burnett Productions. It is only through your support that we are able to present this annual event.

Congratulations to all of the winners and all of those who came second. We appreciate your support and hope you enjoyed this Sunshine Coast event. There were great items sold during the auction and many bargains. Most of the funds raised will go directly to local projects, scholarships, cultural and athletic organizations and charities with the balance to Rotary International projects such as the worldwide eradication of polio (we are almost there) and clean drinking water (we have a long way to go). Every little bit helps and we thank you for your support..

I was there when the Rotary put in some brand new volleyball courts.

Volleyball Anyone? Photo Duane Burnett.

Local MLA Nicolas Simons had fun with some local children at the informal opening of the new volleyball courts in Sechelt. The children were passing by after a swim at the beach when they came upon the Rotary BBQ. The Rotarians fed the children hamburgers and hot dogs and encouraged them to give the new courts a try.

The Sunshine Coast Rotary Club, Sechelt branch finished the first phase of their project, the children’s play park, in 2007. Now, two new volleyball courts are ready for action.

Members of the Rotary say that they are excited to off er something special for the youth of Coast. they also anticipate that the new facilities will attract tournaments that will feed the local economy.

In a few months, there will be 35 paved parking spots and a road link from Wharf Road to Xenichen Ave. Phase three of the project will see the closure of Sinku Drive along the waterfront, so the park can be extended down to the beach where there are plans for a viewing platform, water access ramp, showers and washrooms. All of these improvements will enhance the existing pier and Torii gate.

On Friday, the Rotary Club hosted an informal, by donation, BBQ to celebrate the completion of the most recent phase of the waterfront park. The project has come together with the hard work of the Rotary Club, BC Gaming grants, donations of material by Construction Aggregates; Gerry Schafer of West Coast Mining built the rock retaining/seating walls; Clark Hamilton Enterprises and financial support from the District of Sechelt.

A formal ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned in the future once the project is completed.

Catching Rotary volunteers in action as they built a wheelchair accessible fishing ramp and dock at Trout Lake, in Halfmoon Bay, BC is just one more example of a typical day in Duane's World!

ACCESSIBLE FISHING AT TROUT LAKE. Photo Duane Burnett.

Last weekend, after several years of planning, the Sechelt Rotary Club were finally able to begin construction on a wheelchair accessible fishing platform at Trout Lake in Halfmoon Bay. The Sechelt Rotary told the Duane that they expect to have it completed and have an official opening ceremony by Mid-August. They still need to put railings up and attach the ramp. They would like to kindly request that the public stay off the structure until it is complete.

NEW FACILITIES FOR HACKETT PARK

Last Sunday, after a lot of fundraising and hard work, the Sechelt Rotary Club held the official opening ceremony of the newly built washrooms and con-cession stand complex at Hackett Park in Sechelt. At the ceremony the facilities were transferred to the care of the District of Sechelt. Mayor Cam Reid and Councilor Darren Inkster were thrilled to have the new facilities and thanked the Sechelt Rotary volunteers for all the great work they do in the community. e concession stand/washrooms will be perfect for events like the Sleepy Hollow Rod Run, Canada Day Festivities, sports tournaments and the Sechelt Arts Festival. is building is a welcome addition to Hackett Park.

And just ONE more reason I was honoured to donate a prize package worth almost $1,000 to the Rotary Auction as well as host the show on COAST Television.

Team "At Night" get's offical MTV Casting page!
# 4371 - At Night

Here is their video entry on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4E5-qRwuszc&

June 22, 2010 by Duane Burnett

A group of Vancouver teen friends set sights on MTV Canada reality show contest called "Casting Call."

Calling themselves @Night, (AtNightt on Twitter) they say "move over LA, Vancouver is where its at. We want our own TV show about us. Our friends, the parties, and our lives."

MTV says they are looking for people with real lives, real experiences, and real friends. "We want to see your real experiences on screen."

The Vancouver Teens love the night life of the city and have answered the contest casting call bid with their own "@Night -- MTV Casting Call" fan page on facebook and a vibrant high energy youtube video filmed at a local nightclub.

Vancouver, B.C. Adrenaline Productions and Twisted Productions team up to bring you amazing all-night events that bring in hundreds and thousands in attendance. The lights and music form an addicting environment that sends the local partiers back for more.

..::THE PITCH::..

What happens when you put a Jewish Starcraft-obsessed engineering student together with a kid way too smart for his age? Then the uber-smart kid gets a bubbly blonde girlfriend and the three of them meet a ridiculously funny Dutch DJ and his quick as a whip Italian girlfriend? Well, read-on...

Who are they you may wonder? Well in most ways they're your typical group of friends. Some making the transition from high school to graduate. Others making the transition from university to...what? It's these pivotal moments in their lives that need to be explored. What's beyond school? What does one do next?

Two things unite this close-nit group of friends: they're all free-thinkers and they all know how to have fun. Each one is quirky and weird in their own unique way, some to greater extremes than others, but when one gets out of line, the others are quick to lay down the law.

Some of them became friends through the usual means - social gatherings, parties, etc. Others became friends and even lovers through the strangest circumstances (Facebook romance anyone?). No matter how they came together though, they share a close bond of camaraderie.

What brings them together you might ask? Well, though they may not look different than any other group of friends, this clique puts on some of the most creative and memorable parties in Vancouver. From 300 to 2000 people - in nightclubs or decked-out warehouses - with local DJs or International Electronic superstars - sometimes for free, usually for profit, but always for the love of the party!

How many people can say that? And of course those who work hard, have to play hard too, so when they're not busy producing shows of their own, they can usually be found in and around lovely Vancouver getting into (and hopefully out of) all sorts of trouble... because when you're in the spotlight, drama follows you whether you asked for it or not!

..::THE CAST::..

THE PROMOTERS:
‘Promoters’ has always sounded like a dirty word to us. You hear that word thrown around a lot in Vancouver These days someone hands you a flyer or a ‘free before 11’ ticket to some club and exclaims “I’m a promoter” with an undeserved cocky attitude. Screw Promoters - call us Party Professionals:

Joel: The realist. The go-getter. At 16 he wrote his first business plan. At 17 he’s the youngest event producer in Vancouver. He co-owns a company, Adrenaline Productions, that puts on terrific events without yet being able to sign a single contract himself. Oh the irony...

Ben: The numbers guy and Joel’s partner. He met Joel while working for another production company where they simultaneously came to the realization that they were doing work for somebody else for free with nothing to gain from it. Fast-forward a year later and you’re looking at Adrenaline Production’s co-founders - and they’re doing very well! Recently single, its her loss because as the promoter and face of some of VanCity’s most memorable all-night parties, the world is his oyster...

Allya: The older, wiser, brother? Older yes, more experienced perhaps, but definitely not wiser (Birthday party shenanigans come to mind). But what he sometimes lacks in restraint, he makes up for in creativity and pure passion. As part of Twisted Productions, he’s DJ’d and thrown parties with the likes of Benny Benassi, Paul Oakenfold, Roger Sanchez, and too many others to list. He brings a wealth of know-how, energy, and attitude into the mix - pun-fully intended.

Alje handles most aspects of event production
, coordinate staff, and organize logistics for our more involved all-night events. Some of the notable artists he has worked with include: Boyz 2 Men, Method Man, Sean Paul, Carl Cox, Eric Prydz, Fedde Le Grand, Judge Jules, Klaas, Pete Tong, Roger Sanchez, Sander Kleinenberg, Tall Paul, Armin Van Buuren (#1 DJ in the world), Paul Van Dyk (#3 DJ in the world), Ferry Corsten (#6 DJ in the world).

"Oh god...are you sure you're ready for the life of drinking everything out of red plastic cups? You should really put up Lloyd's Adrenaline/Twisted promo vid. Nothing explains our existence better than that." Alje 'Allya' Vennema

THE HEART & SOUL: Behind every great man, there’s an even greater woman... Except for Ben... but see? That’s a story hook! Anyway, in this group there are two:

Megan: Joel’s faithful and ever-helpful girlfriend. Eternally patient even when cashing-out a party at 7am, always ready to jump in when staff are in need, she’s the heart of the group. With a happy-go-lucky attitude, she’s near impossible to get down. Well, Allya may have done it once or twice... But Megan still comes out on top as the one to make everyone smile no matter what the circumstances. She also counts money faster than a bill counter, which is VERY handy in this business.

Alecia: Last but certainly not least. Okay, well she is the smallest of the group, but only in stature. In personality, she’s by far the biggest. Big personality is sort of a prerequisite for being Italian though, isn’t it? Her boyfriend, Allya, knows her loud side better than anyone. And if she’s ever being uncharacteristically quiet, it’s only because she’s blasting Deadmau5 while galavanting around in her Hummer. On that note, she’s not a very good driver yet either. I sense possible hilarity here...

Haha No doubt a show about teens who organize and go to raves and party would be so much more interesting then listening to a bunch of rich girls whine about their problems :P Alycia Byjork

@Night includes a Sunshine Coast, BC connection too! Megan Fraser has lived near Sechelt, BC for 5 years and went to Chatelech Secondary School. She told me her friend Alessia came to her with the idea, and as Alessia was out of town she got Megan to start everything. She has known Alessia and her boyfriend for almost a year now, and Megan's boyfriend, Joel has known them for awhile longer.

Megan has been with her boyfriend Joel for 2 years now, and he lives in Port Coquitlam, BC - so she is in the city every chance she gets. Then there is Ben, Joel's business partner and long time friend who Megan has known almost as long as she has known Joel.

Over the last year, Megan says the "5 of us have been spending so much time together. Partying, hanging out, and traveling!"

Her friend Alessia Buonsanti thinks their reality show idea is "perfect for a group of friends who plan events as well as go to most of the events."

"We have a great deal of drama and situations that I think people would love to watch."

All have different backgrounds and come from all parts of the city, the upper mainland and lower mainland. Alessia lives in Vancouver, Aljes from North Van, Megan lives in Sechelt, on the Sunshine Coast, Joel is from Coquitlam, and Bens from White Rock.

The MTV contest challenge is to create a video that shows why you and your friends deserve your own MTV Broadband reality Series, and/or why someone should rate/comment on your video. http://casting.mtv.ca/

@Night is definitely off to a great start in fulfilling the show's criteria to:

# Show your personality, and the crazy personalities of your friends. Think MTV, anything from drama to comedy, that showcases your real dynamic.
# It can be spontaneous or scripted, however you want to approach it.
# You will be judged on your creativity, chemistry, and the ratings you get when people check out your profile. Be real, and be you.

I'll keep you posted on when to VOTE and how our local Vancouver friends do in the contest. Stay tuned for more updates.

Thanks for reading my blog, "liking" it, sharing it, and all your comments and feedback too!

Greatly appreciated. Duane Burnett
